PIAA Serioius Injury Report
PIAA Official's Page
Center (C) :

  1. Stop at midfield cone on change of possession - stay there and trail the ball into the offensive half of field -
straddle the cone at the sideline.  You should stay at the cone for 2-3-4 seconds unless the ball becomes
loose in zones 2 and 3.  It's ok to occasionally blow by the cone on a fast break, but all other changes the C
should stop at the cone.  (C does not stop at the cone on a faceoff)
  2. If ball becomes loose in zone 2 or 3 on a clear near midfield - stay at the cone and watch the action, it can
    save you some steps.
  3. Settled position is 5-7 yards above the goal line.  We are seeing C's much further than 5-7 yards, some at the
    corner of the attack box.
  4. If C (entire crew) is too long at same position (no scores) - rotate at a dead ball or timeout.
  5. C has 10 second counts on a change - we've seen LOTS of missed counts.  There seems to be confusion on
who has counts - C has most until T is in position
  6. C only has 20 second beeper on a faceoff - otherwise kept by T, we've seen a "failure to clear" called by C,
    should not happen.
  7. Pay attention to offsides - it's the C's primary responsibility on a change of possession, then the Trail.

  1. On a crease violation - ball is awarded to B at goal line extended - not top of box
  2. Trail has 20 second beeper except for faceoff - C (only time C has the 20 second beeper)
  3. Sweep the box and watch subs until all the contested subs are complete - stop at the near cone to where you
    were Lead, includes faceoffs
  4. Recommended settled location mid-point between top of attack box and wing line.  It is not at the cone at the
table ares or 1-2 yards inside the mid-field line.

Lead (L) :

  1. Priority - goal line, end line - get to end line on close calls, don't plant yourself on goal line.
  2. When L is pulled to goal line C should move in and be prepared to cover goal

Faceoffs :

  1. Faceoff official - present ball to the Trail (hold the ball up in air as soon as you reach center x) - then Trail
pumps arm and starts 20 second beeper (applies to both 2 and 3 man mechanics)
  2. Faceoff official - don't bail out prior to whistle, hold your position and stay still before blowing whistle.
  3. We're getting confused on a faceoff after a goal.  C takes the face, L goes to C.  Faceoff official place your
back to the goal that was just scored.  Present the ball to the T as soon as you reach center x to start the
beeper.  No need for the faceoff official to look behind - look to the T for the signal when ready to have the
faceoff.  Faceoff official should ALWAYS back out to the bench side where you will now be the L.

2 man mechanics :

  1. Faceoff official - you MUST back out to the side you will be the Lead.  You have that entire sideline to cover.

General :

  1. Signals - make sure they are STRONG - seeing LOTS of weak signals, or just verbal signals.
  2. Don't get caught inside - work from sidelines in and keep all players in front
  3. Rules - any foul by offense stops play immediately and results in a turnover - either technical or personal.  No
slow whistle technique for fouls by A
  4. Rules - change for 2009 - rule 7-3 - when there is a foul and the ball is in the attack box, do not restart at the
top of the box.  It must be restarted laterally outside the box nearest to the spot of the ball at the time of the
whistle. (it gives an unfair advantage to the offense to restart at the top of the box)
  5. Pushes - on endline or sideline that cause the player to be out of bounds need to be called, make sure the
player doesn't turn into the push and create the foul.  If a player is pushed out of bounds enforce the pushing
foul, the player going OB causes the play to stop.
  6. Shots OB over endline - play should be restarted in the approx same spot where it went OB - do not allow a
ball OB in the alley or sideline to restart behind the cage.
  7. Sideline OB - teams get a horn and can substitute.  Even if there is another quick turnover and the player/ball
is OB the team can get another horn and substiitute.
  8. Flag down - if you have a flag down and slow whistle - all officials should raise their hand and communicate
    "FLAG DOWN".
  9. Flag down - if the ball is in the attack box and the offense brings it outside - stop play immediately, the slow
    whistle stops.
